Taking sustainability into account

The first workshop on environmental impact and cost assessment of the HyMethShip concept was held in Southampton on December 12, 2018. The aim of the workshop was to further develop a common vision of these aspects and to enter the environmental and economical assessment issues into the technical design process. Chalmers is responsible for the work packages, with Dr Selma Brynolf as work package leader.  The discussions in the workshop were on the choices that are needed for the assessments; what are the relevant alternative technologies to compare with, how to set system boundaries and functional unit for the comparison and many others.

Both opportunities and limitations of the technical design were found emerging when taking into account the whole system including environmental aspects. The HyMethShipSystem with the selected system boundaries for the assessments are illustrated in the figure which is part of the slideshow below.

Inspiring HAZID-Workshop in Southampton https://www.hymethship.com/2018/12/20/hazid-workshop-in-southampton/ Thu, 20 Dec 2018 16:30:31 +0000 https://www.hymethship.com/?p=48962

Inspiring HAZID-Workshop in Southampton

On December 10-12, the HAZID-Workshop took place in Southhampton with all partners of the HyMethShip project. The workshop screened the development, deployment, and operation of HyMethShip technology, and identified dangers as compared to similar technology related claims and associated risks. Risk specialists from Lloyd’s Register directed a team of subject matter experts from the consortium partners in a preliminary hazard identification study. The methodical creative brainstorming technique allowed to identify potential risks of the new technology building blocks and recommend mitigation strategies where necessary – even early in the concept design phase. The recommendations will be considered during the detailed design process and continuous risk evaluation will ensure safe operation of the technology demonstrator.

Lloyd’s Register

LR is a leading international provider of classification, compliance and consultancy services to the marine and offshore industries, helping our clients design, construct and operate their assets to the highest levels of safety and performance.

The workshop was an important step to set the right course for the implementation of the project at an early stage. I would like to thank the workshop organisers for their professionalism and the host Lloyds Register for their warm welcome.
